Matty Monethi (geb. 1996) wurde in Maseru, Lesotho, geboren und wuchs in Addis Abeba, Äthiopien, auf. Monethi schloss 2016 ihr Diplom in Bildender Kunst an der Ruth Prowse School of Art in Kapstadt ab und begab sich 2017 auf ein Auslandssemester an der University of Hertfordshire im Vereinigten Königreich, wo sie sich auf Druckgrafik spezialisierte. Im Jahr 2020 schloss Monethi einen BA Fine Arts
(mit Auszeichnung) an der Wits School of Arts, University of the Witwatersrand, in Johannesburg ab. Monethi nutzt Malerei, Druckgrafik und Text, um die persönlichen Dimensionen von Migration und Erinnerung zu erforschen. Durch die Verwendung von Familien- und persönlichen Fotoarchiven untersucht sie ihre Verbindungen zu ihren Wahlheimaten, Kulturen und engen Beziehungen.
